St. Thomas boys tennis gets back on track; picks up 9-0 sweep of Pembroke.
STA (6-2) bounced back nicely after a tough loss yesterday. They were able to defeat Pembroke (0-7) comfortably taking all 9 matches. The match almost didn't happen due to a passing heavy rain storm but Coach and the boys were able to act quickly and make the court playable. Once the courts were ready STA's top 4 players wasted little time picking up wins. Captain Miguel Diaz got back in the win column picking up the 8-2 victory at #1 singles. Sophomore Owen Himmer earned an 8-3 win at #2 singles despite falling behind early. Jack Dillow and Jake McGuire picked up easy 8-1 and 8-0 victories at #3 and #4 singles respectively.
The last two singles matches were a lot more exciting. Junior Jack Benelli fell behind 3-0 with a rough start before rallying to pick up the 8-5 win in the #5 spot. Senior Hayden Blaisdell fought hard in the #6 spot during a tightly contested match. He picked up his play at the end and finished off his opponent 8-5. After sweeping singles the Saints continued to impress when the doubles matches began.
McGuire and Baxter Kimball continued their undefeated steak as a pair with a dominating 8-1 win at #3 doubles. Diaz paired with Senior Trevor McAden to pick up the 8-4 win in the #1 spot. McAden was making his first start as a varsity tennis player. Coach was impressed with McAden's ability to play strong at the net while stepping into the #1 spot without ever having played for points. The strong duo of Dillow and Benelli finished the sweep with an 8-4 victory at #2 doubles.
STA hopes to begin another win streak as they host Coe-Brown tomorrow in what will be their 3rd match in as many days.
